Tracking transactions

How do Bitcoin network fees work?

A Bitcoin network fee is a charge for processing a transaction through a Bitcoin network.

The fee depends on the network you use. It is separate from any service fee charged by Bitnomi.

Who receives the network fee?

Bitnomi does not keep the Bitcoin network fee.

Network

Who receives the fee?

Bitcoin on-chain

Bitcoin miners who confirm transactions and add them to the blockchain

Lightning

Lightning network participants that help route the payment

Spark

Spark currently does not charge a network fee, but this may change

Why do on-chain fees change?

Bitcoin on-chain transactions compete for limited space on the blockchain.

Fees may increase when:

  • Many transactions are waiting to be confirmed

  • The Bitcoin network is busy

  • The transaction requires more blockchain space

  • A faster confirmation is requested

When the network is quieter, fees may be lower.

Is the fee based on the amount sent?

Not necessarily.

An on-chain fee is mainly based on the size of the transaction and the selected fee rate—not simply the amount of Bitcoin being transferred.

This means sending a larger Bitcoin amount does not always cost more than sending a smaller amount.

Does a higher fee make an on-chain transaction faster?

A higher fee can make miners more likely to confirm the transaction sooner, especially when the network is busy.

A lower fee may cost less, but the transaction could remain pending for longer.

Bitnomi shows the applicable fee before you confirm the transaction.

How do Lightning fees work?

Lightning payments usually have lower fees than on-chain transactions.

The fee may depend on:

  • The route used to reach the recipient

  • The number of network participants involved

  • The payment amount

  • Current network availability

Lightning fees are generally more suitable for smaller and frequent payments.

Does Spark charge a network fee?

The Spark network currently does not charge a network fee for transfers.

This may change in the future. Always check the transaction preview for the latest fee information before confirming.

What is the difference between a network fee and a Bitnomi fee?

Fee

What it covers

Network fee

Processing the transaction through Bitcoin on-chain, Lightning, or another supported network

Bitnomi fee

A service fee that may apply when using Bitnomi to buy or sell Bitcoin

The transaction preview will show the applicable fees before you confirm an action.

Which network usually costs less?

  • Lightning usually has low fees and is suitable for smaller payments.

  • Spark currently has no network fee.

  • Bitcoin on-chain may have higher fees, especially when the network is busy.

The lowest-cost option is not always the correct one. Make sure the recipient supports the network you select.

What should I check before confirming?

Review:

  • The selected network

  • The network fee

  • Any Bitnomi service fee

  • The amount the recipient will receive

  • The total amount deducted from your wallet

  • The estimated transaction time

Once a Bitcoin transaction is submitted, the network fee is generally not refundable—even if you entered the wrong recipient details.
