What is a self-custody wallet?

A self-custody wallet is a Bitcoin wallet where you control access to your funds.

Instead of Bitnomi holding your Bitcoin for you, your wallet is protected by a private recovery phrase that belongs only to you.

What does self-custody mean?

Self-custody means:

  • You control your Bitcoin

  • You are responsible for protecting your recovery phrase

  • Bitnomi cannot move your Bitcoin without your approval

  • Bitnomi cannot recover your wallet if you lose access to both your device and recovery phrase

Your Bitcoin is still visible and transferable through the Bitnomi app, but control remains with you.

How does self-custody work in Bitnomi?

When you set up your Bitnomi wallet, you receive a 12-word recovery phrase.

This recovery phrase is used to recover all supported Bitnomi wallets, including:

Wallet

Purpose

BTC Pay

Fast Bitcoin payments through supported networks such as Lightning and Spark

BTC Vault

Bitcoin transfers through the on-chain network

The same recovery phrase protects access to both wallets.

Why is the recovery phrase important?

Your recovery phrase is the backup for your wallet.

You may need it if:

  • You lose your phone

  • Your device is damaged

  • You reinstall the Bitnomi app

  • You want to recover the wallet on another supported device

Anyone who has your recovery phrase may be able to access your Bitcoin.

What is Bitnomi responsible for?

Bitnomi provides the app and services that help you manage, buy, sell, send, and receive Bitcoin.

Bitnomi can also help with account access, KYC, bank details, and order-related support.

However, Bitnomi does not know or store your recovery phrase and cannot restore it for you.

What are you responsible for?

With a self-custody wallet, you are responsible for:

  • Writing down your recovery phrase correctly

  • Keeping it private and secure

  • Protecting your PIN and device

  • Checking addresses and networks before sending Bitcoin

  • Recovering your wallet when moving to a new device

How should I protect my wallet?

  • Write down your recovery phrase and keep it offline

  • Keep the words in the correct order

  • Do not take screenshots

  • Do not store it in email, cloud storage, notes, or messaging apps

  • Never share it with anyone, including Bitnomi Support

  • Keep a second copy in another secure location

What happens if I lose my recovery phrase?

Losing the recovery phrase does not immediately remove access to your Bitcoin if your wallet is still available on your device.

However, if you later lose access to that device, the wallet may not be recoverable.

If both your device and recovery phrase are lost, Bitnomi cannot recover the wallet or the Bitcoin stored in it.
