Bitcoin networks

What is the Bitcoin on-chain network?

The Bitcoin on-chain network is the main Bitcoin network where transactions are recorded directly on the Bitcoin blockchain.

In Bitnomi, on-chain Bitcoin is held in your BTC Vault wallet.

Why use the on-chain network?

Standard Bitcoin transfers

Send Bitcoin to and receive Bitcoin from standard Bitcoin addresses used by wallets and exchanges.

Built for larger transfers

On-chain is commonly used for larger or less frequent transactions and for holding Bitcoin in BTC Vault.

Recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain

Every confirmed transaction is added directly to the Bitcoin blockchain.

Widely supported

Most Bitcoin wallets and exchanges support on-chain Bitcoin transfers.

How long do transactions take?

An on-chain transaction may receive its first confirmation in around 10 minutes, but the actual time can vary.

Transactions may take longer when:

  • The Bitcoin network is busy

  • The sender selects a lower network fee

  • Many transactions are waiting to be confirmed

A pending transaction does not necessarily mean it has failed.

Why do network fees change?

On-chain transactions include a fee paid to the Bitcoin network.

The fee can change based on:

  • Current network activity

  • The number of transactions waiting

  • The size of the transaction

  • The selected fee rate

When the network is busy, a higher fee may help the transaction confirm sooner.

The fee is not based only on how much Bitcoin you send. A larger Bitcoin amount does not always mean a higher fee.

When should I use it?

The on-chain network may be suitable when you:

  • Want to send Bitcoin to a standard Bitcoin address

  • Want to receive Bitcoin from a wallet or exchange

  • Are transferring a larger amount

  • Do not need the payment to arrive instantly

  • Want to hold Bitcoin in BTC Vault

For smaller and faster payments, Lightning or Spark through BTC Pay may be more suitable.

What should I check before using it?

Make sure the sender or recipient is using the Bitcoin on-chain network.

Do not use an on-chain address for Lightning or Spark payments. Choosing the wrong network may cause the transaction to fail or result in permanent loss of funds.
